How to Compute Final Grades in College (Philippines): Weighted Components, Term Grades, and the 1.0–5.0 Scale

Unlike DepEd’s standardized formula, college grade computation in the Philippines is set by each instructor’s syllabus — which is exactly why students (and new instructors) get confused. This guide explains the standard structure almost every Philippine college course follows, with two worked examples you can adapt to your own course.

The mental model: a college grade is built in three layers — components (weighted categories) → term grades (Prelim, Midterm, Finals) → a final grade mapped to the 1.0–5.0 scale. Get those three layers straight and any syllabus becomes readable.

Layer 1 — weighted components

A typical syllabus assigns a weight to each category of work:

For each component: Percentage Score = (earned ÷ possible) × 100, then multiply by the weight. The term grade is the sum.

Worked example (Prelim):

Layer 2 — combining term grades

Two common schemes — check the syllabus, because this is where courses differ most:

A. Simple averaging:

Final = (Prelim + Midterm + Finals) ÷ 3

B. Progressive weighting (later terms count more):

Final = Prelim × 30% + Midterm × 30% + Finals × 40%

Example with scheme B: Prelim 85.2, Midterm 81.5, Finals 88.0 →
85.2(.30) + 81.5(.30) + 88.0(.40) = 25.56 + 24.45 + 35.20 = 85.21

Some schools use a cumulative system instead — e.g., Midterm grade = ⅓ Prelim + ⅔ current-term performance — so each term grade already folds in the previous one. Always follow your registrar’s stated formula.

Layer 3 — the 1.0–5.0 equivalent scale

The percentage maps to the Philippine collegiate scale. A common mapping (institutions vary — always publish yours in the syllabus):

So the example student’s 85.21 → 2.00.

A second example, start to finish

A different student, simple-averaging course, passing floor 75:

  • Prelim 78.0, Midterm 72.4, Finals 80.6
  • Final = (78.0 + 72.4 + 80.6) ÷ 3 = 77.0 → maps to 2.75 (Passing)

Note how the weak Midterm dragged the average — under progressive weighting (scheme B), the strong Finals would have pulled it slightly higher. The scheme choice genuinely changes outcomes, which is why transparency in the syllabus matters.

Tips for instructors

  • Publish weights in the syllabus and never change them mid-term — the #1 source of grade disputes.
  • Keep raw scores, not just percentages — recomputation requests are trivial when you have the earned/possible pairs.
  • Decide your rounding rule in advance (e.g., final percentage rounded to two decimals before mapping) and apply it to everyone.
  • Run a quick item analysis on major exams — failed items are sometimes the exam’s fault, not the class’s.
  • Watch your INC and 5.00 policies — know your school’s completion deadlines before finals.

Frequently asked questions

Is 75 always the passing grade?
It’s the most common floor (mapped to 3.00), but some institutions pass at 70 or use 60-based scales. The registrar’s policy wins.

INC vs 5.00 — what’s the difference?
INC (incomplete) means requirements are missing but the standing is passable once completed; 5.00 is a failing earned grade. Each school sets completion deadlines for INCs.

Can components differ per term?
Yes — e.g., a thesis-heavy Finals term might weight the project at 40%. Just state it in the syllabus per term.

Do I round each term grade or only the final?
Define it once and be consistent. A common approach: keep term grades at two decimals and round only the final percentage before mapping to the 1.0–5.0 scale.

What’s the difference between college and DepEd grading?
DepEd uses one standardized formula and transmutation table; college grading is instructor-defined per syllabus, on the 1.0–5.0 scale. Don’t apply one system’s rules to the other.
