Senior High School has never had one set of weights, and under the Strengthened SHS programme it has several — some subjects have no examinations component at all, and others are assessed by the term examination alone. A teacher carrying a single template across every load will compute at least one subject wrongly.
This guide lays out the subject groups, their weights, and the two structural exceptions that catch people out.
The 10-second answer: Weights depend on the subject group, not the track. Core and academic electives run 20 / 50 / 30; arts, sports, health and wellness electives run 20 / 60 / 20; TechPro runs 15 / 65 / 20; field exposure and apprenticeship groups run 15 / 70 / 15 with the term examination alone; research and design electives run 40 / 60 and Work Immersion 20 / 80 — both with no examinations component.
The weight table
| Subject group | Written Works | Performance Tasks | Examinations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core subjects and other academic electives | 20% | 50% | 30% |
| Arts, Sports, Health & Wellness electives | 20% | 60% | 20% |
| TechPro electives | 15% | 65% | 20% |
| Field Exposure, Arts Apprenticeship, Creative Production & Innovation | 15% | 70% | 15% (term exam only) |
| Research electives, Design & Innovation | 40% | 60% | — (none) |
| Work Immersion | 20% | 80% | — (none) |
Two patterns are worth naming. First, the more practical the subject, the heavier the performance tasks — Work Immersion at 80% is the extreme case, and it is the right one. Second, the examinations component is not universal, which is the part templates get wrong.
The two structural exceptions
1. Groups with no examinations component
Research electives, Design and Innovation, and Work Immersion have no examinations component at all. Written Works and Performance Tasks carry the whole grade. If your template insists on an examinations column, do not invent an assessment to fill it — that is the template failing to match the subject, and inventing a test to satisfy a spreadsheet inverts the entire point of the design.
2. Groups assessed by the term examination alone
Field Exposure, Arts Apprenticeship, and Creative Production and Innovation have an examinations component of 15% consisting of the term examination alone — no ST1, no ST2. The component percentage is simply the term exam percentage.
For every other SHS group the usual 30/30/40 split inside the examinations component applies, and each assessment is converted to its own percentage before weighting — see when to give ST1, ST2, and the term examination.
Picking the right group
The single most common error is choosing the group from the track rather than from the subject. A learner in the Sports track takes core subjects that are graded as core subjects. A research subject is graded as a research subject regardless of the strand it sits in.
Three questions that resolve most cases:
- Is it a core subject or an academic elective? 20/50/30.
- Is it immersion, field exposure, apprenticeship, or production? Those are the heavy-performance groups, and two of them change the examinations component.
- Is it research or design? 40/60, no examinations.
If the subject genuinely does not fit, ask your department head before the term starts rather than mid-grading. The group determines the weights, and re-grading a term because the group was wrong is a long afternoon.
A worked example
A TechPro elective (15 / 65 / 20). Written Works 86%, Performance Tasks 91%, Examinations component 79%.
- Written Works: 86 × 0.15 = 12.90
- Performance Tasks: 91 × 0.65 = 59.15
- Examinations: 79 × 0.20 = 15.80
- Initial grade: 87.85
The initial grade is then transmuted with this year’s adjusted table to give the term grade — see the MATATAG grading and transmutation guide.
The same subject taken as a core subject (20/50/30) would produce 17.20 + 45.50 + 23.70 = 86.40. A grade and a half of difference from the group alone, on identical performance — which is why the group is not a detail.
Grade 12 is a separate case this year
Grade 12 in SY 2026–2027 is not on the Strengthened SHS weights — it keeps its older component groups (Core 25/50/25, Academic 25/45/30, Work Immersion 35/40/25, TVL and the Sports and Arts & Design tracks 20/60/20). Everything else is the same as here: three terms, ST1 30% + ST2 30% + Term Exam 40%, the adjusted transmutation table, and a unit-weighted general average. The detail is in Grade 12 grading this year.
Frequently asked questions
Do SHS subjects use three terms?
Senior High School runs on semesters, and how the grading periods map for your load is set by your school’s programme. Confirm with your department head — this is precisely the kind of detail that differs between schools during a transition year.
What if a subject has no summative tests but my record demands two?
Then your record is not matched to the subject group. The term-exam-only groups take one assessment in that component; leaving invented columns empty distorts the computation.
How do I handle Work Immersion with an industry partner’s assessment?
It is performance evidence and belongs in Performance Tasks, converted to a percentage like any other task, with the partner’s instrument kept as evidence. Work Immersion has no examinations component, so nothing else is required.
Are the weights per term or per semester?
The weights apply to each grading period’s computation; the final grade is formed from those period grades according to your programme’s structure. Get the period structure confirmed in writing at the start of the semester.
Where Skoolari fits
Skoolari’s MATATAG class record carries each SHS group as its own profile, so choosing the subject group sets the weights, the number of examination columns, and whether the component exists at all. The groups with no examinations component simply do not show one; the term-exam-only groups show a single column. Grade 12 has its own profile with two quarters per semester. Everything computes with the adjusted transmutation table, exports to Excel, and prints under your own school header. See the plans, or read what changed in the three-term school year for the wider picture.
Verify the subject group and its weights against the current DepEd issuance and your school’s programme before the term begins. Group assignment is a school-level decision, and yours governs.
